Tummy tuck recovery week by week: a realistic guide
14.09.2026
After abdominoplasty, deeper tissues of the abdominal wall heal as well as the skin. During the first days, patients walk slightly flexed, feel tension and need practical help. Swelling and firmness can persist for months, so the early appearance is not the final result.
At IYA Clinic in Kyiv, recovery after abdominoplasty depends on procedure extent, diastasis repair, associated liposuction and health. Operations are performed at MIRUM Clinic, 1 Viktora Nekrasova Street, Kyiv.
Preparing before surgery
Arrange transport and responsible adult support for at least the first day. Place essentials within easy reach and prepare loose front-fastening clothes. Buy medication and compression garments only from the clinic’s list. Nicotine compromises tissue perfusion; the surgeon sets the required cessation period. Report anticoagulants, hormones, supplements and previous thrombosis without stopping medication yourself.
The first 24–72 hours
Pain, nausea, urination, dressings and drains are monitored. Stand with assistance according to the team’s instructions. Early gentle walking reduces thrombosis risk but does not mean long walks. Sleep on the back with the torso elevated and knees flexed to reduce tension.
Approximate timeline
| Period | Common experience | Main priority |
|---|---|---|
| Days 1–3 | Pain, tension, swelling, drains | Analgesia, short walks, thrombosis prevention |
| Week 1 | Gradual straightening, fatigue | Review, wound care, compression |
| Weeks 2–3 | Daily movement becomes easier | No heavy lifting; gradual activity |
| Weeks 4–6 | Swelling decreases but remains | Return to exercise only when cleared |
| Months 2–6 | Contour and scar keep changing | Stable weight, scar care, follow-up |
This is a guide, not calendar-based clearance. Larger surgery or complications change the timing.
Drains and compression
Drains remove fluid from the operative area. If instructed, record volume and colour. Removal depends on clinical output rather than one fixed day. Sudden cessation with increasing one-sided swelling requires contact with the team.
Wear compression according to the surgeon’s plan. It must not roll, cut into skin or cause numbness. Do not add tight belts without approval.
Wound and scar care
Do not remove or wet dressings earlier than instructed. Do not apply alcohol, peroxide, iodine, antibiotic ointment or silicone without approval. Silicone and scar massage begin only after surface closure and review.
The scar can initially be pink, firm or uneven and may mature for a year or longer. Sun can fix pigmentation, so use clothing and recommended sunscreen.
Work, driving and exercise
Some patients resume remote work after one or two weeks if they can change position and rest. Physical work takes longer. Do not drive while using sedating pain medicine or until emergency braking and movement are comfortable.
Plan short rest periods rather than remaining in bed all day. Adequate hydration, protein intake and the prescribed bowel regimen can make early recovery more manageable.
Increase walking gradually. Running, strength work, lifting and direct abdominal exercise resume after examination. Protecting the deep repair is particularly important after diastasis correction.
Swelling, seroma and sensation
Swelling is often uneven and worse in the evening. Lower abdominal numbness can persist for months. A seroma may feel like fluid movement or increasing volume; do not massage it yourself—contact the surgeon.
| Symptom | Action |
|---|---|
| Gradual swelling without severe pain | Follow the plan and discuss at review |
| Sudden one-sided swelling or active bleeding | Contact the clinic immediately |
| Breathlessness, chest pain or coughing blood | Call emergency services |
| Pain or swelling in one calf | Seek urgent assessment |
| Fever, pus or rapidly spreading redness | Contact the surgeon urgently |
Frequently asked questions
How long is compression worn?
The duration follows operation type and reviews. Do not shorten or extend it yourself.
When can I sleep on my side?
When the surgeon agrees and the position causes no tension or pain. Early stomach sleeping is generally avoided.
When can I stand fully straight?
Gradually, without forceful stretching. It may take days or several weeks depending on tissue tension.
Is lymphatic drainage massage required?
Not for everyone and not immediately. The surgeon selects timing, area and technique; aggressive massage can cause harm.
When is the final result visible?
Major swelling decreases over weeks, but contour and scar evolve for months. Early assessment is not final.
When can pregnancy be planned?
After complete recovery and discussion with the surgeon and obstetrician. Pregnancy remains possible but can change the tissues and result.
